Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I schedule my first lesson?
A: You can contact me directly via email at bstpt@aol.com, via text or phone at 323-351-5517.

Q: Do I need to have my own trumpet before I start lessons?
A: Yes and no. If you schedule an online lesson you would need to have your own trumpet and mouthpiece, but if you're taking a lesson in person I can loan you one for the first lesson. I can also help you to find a trumpet that suits your needs.

Q: What materials or books do I need?
A: For the first lesson you won't need to bring anything. I have everything that you'll need to get you started. I will design a lesson plan specifically for you to address your needs and goals.

Q: Do you teach beginners? How about advanced students?
A: I teach students of all ages and all levels.

Q: Is it ever too late to learn the trumpet?
A: NO! You can start the trumpet at almost any age. I do recommend that children should have their permanent front teeth before starting. Personally, I started at age ten. I've had students from ages 8 to 80!

Q: What styles of music do you teach? Do you only teach jazz?
A: I teach all styles. While I specialize in jazz- as that's my primary focus as a professional musician- my teaching is grounded in the fundamentals of trumpet playing. No matter your preferred style, mastering the core techniques is essential. I can help you build those foundational skills to play any type of music, from jazz and rock to classical and beyond.

Testimonials

Daniel B.

Just started lessons with Brian and I know I’m going to learn so much from him. He is very legit, on time, and in depth with the lesson plan. Definitely recommend!

Jeb Bunker -

I met Brian Swartz my first year at USC. He was by a long shot the most accomplished and talented improviser in the USC big band. I watched him and learned little tricks, like he would keep a little note book and write down lines that caught his ear. Which I’m sure he later went back and committed to memory in the practice room. Anyway, long story short, any musician can learn lots of good stuff from this brilliant musician.

Tina C. -

With more than 6 years learning experience with Brian, my son always loves his trumpet lesson and keeps improving his trumpet skill. Brian also helped my son a lot on preparing various trumpet auditions. He is a great trumpet teacher!

Bennett R. -

He’s great! Extremely knowledgeable about technique. He’s been hugely helpful in assisting me in developing my tone, my range, and the fundamentals of playing. He knows music. His love of jazz is infectious. Brian has brought music alive for me.

Janna S. -

Brian is great at reading the kid. He knows when to push them harder to excel and when to hold back and make it fun. He finds a way to explain things so that they really understand. We've been going to him for lessons for 6 years, and are very satisfied.
